Apex Audio Science
Why Apex footsteps are hard to track
Apex Legends has the most complex movement audio of any popular FPS. Footstep frequency signatures change depending on legend weight class, movement speed, surface material, and movement type (walking, sliding, climbing). StepFreq's Apex profile is tuned to capture all states.

Heavy Movement
100 – 300 Hz
Gibraltar, Caustic, Newcastle land differently than Wraith or Octane. The low-mid thud zone lets you identify legend weight class and judge jump landings from above.
Slide + Texture
1 – 3 kHz
Slide cancels, bunny hops, and surface transitions all register in this range. The most information-dense band in Apex — boost it correctly and the audio tells you exactly what the enemy is doing.
Fast Movement Edge
4 – 6 kHz
The high-frequency click that Octane and Pathfinder movement creates during sprint and grapple landings. Also separates bullet impacts from footsteps during close fights.
How it works
Apex EQ profile in 30 seconds
Apex's movement-heavy gameplay means more sounds competing for your attention. StepFreq's two-layer approach — headphone correction first, Apex footstep boost second — makes movement audio stand out without drowning in gunfire.
01
Correct your headphones
All headphones color sound. Your Sony XM5s emphasize bass. Your DT 990 Pros have a treble spike. StepFreq corrects these before anything else, giving you a flat baseline to work from.
02
Apex movement boost layered on
StepFreq adds a parametric EQ layer targeting Apex's three footstep zones. Wider boosts at 100–300 Hz and 1–3 kHz to cover the full range of legend weight classes and movement speeds.
